Matalan Warehouse & Distribution Centre: Scope of Works

Interkey Contracting was appointed to undertake a comprehensive programme of refurbishment, maintenance, and infrastructure upgrades at one of Matalan’s key UK warehouse and distribution facilities. This high-traffic site required phased, low-disruption works to support the continued flow of logistics and operational activity — from goods-in to dispatch and office administration.

Key Project Aspects:​

​

• Loading Bay and Yard Repairs: We completed essential resurfacing works across the external logistics yard and loading bay areas. This included tarmac replacement, surface levelling, line marking for HGV bays and pedestrian zones, and installation of reinforced edging details. Our team phased the works to maintain site operations and ensure safe vehicle manoeuvring at all times.

• Toilet Refurbishments with New Pipework: Welfare facilities across the distribution centre were fully upgraded. This involved stripping out outdated sanitary systems, installing new copper and PVC pipework, and delivering contemporary finishes including hygienic cladding, slip-resistant vinyl flooring, sensor-operated fittings, and energy-efficient water controls. All installations were carried out in compliance with WRAS regulations and Matalan’s site standards.

• Lighting & Electrical Upgrade (Internal, External & Emergency): We replaced the entire lighting infrastructure with energy-efficient LED lighting systems, enhancing visibility, reducing power consumption, and improving safety. Works included:

• Warehouse and racking aisle lighting upgrades

• Emergency lighting systems installation

• External perimeter and access lighting enhancements

• New distribution boards and containment systems​

• Roof Leak Repairs: Targeted remedial works were undertaken across various roof areas to resolve long-standing water ingress issues. This included strip and reseal works to roof lights, flashing reinstatements, and isolated panel replacements using like-for-like cladding systems.

• Perimeter Fence Repairs: Security fencing around the warehouse perimeter was inspected, repaired, and reinforced where necessary. Damaged mesh sections, posts, and concrete plinths were replaced to restore site security and visual consistency. Anti-climb enhancements were also added to vulnerable areas following client request.

• Concrete Repairs (Slabs, Ramps, and Kerbs): We undertook critical structural repairs across the yard and access infrastructure, including patch repairs to concrete hardstanding slabs, reformed vehicle ramps, and reinstated kerbs. Each area was prepared, poured, and cured with minimal impact on logistics operations, with temporary works implemented to reroute traffic as required.

• New Vinyl Safety Flooring: In high-footfall internal zones including offices and staff corridors, we installed new commercial-grade safety vinyl flooring, selected for its slip resistance, chemical durability, and ease of maintenance. All subfloors were prepared and primed, ensuring a durable and long-lasting finish.

• New Sockets and Data Points in Offices: To support improved office functionality, our electrical teams installed new twin power sockets, data outlets, and containment trunking throughout various admin spaces. All works were tested and certified, ensuring full compatibility with Matalan’s IT and security systems.
